When it was announced back in January that Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters had been delayed by almost an entire year, I think it was pretty obvious that it was not a good sign. The movie didn’t need to be anything more than simple, straightforward b-movie fun, and I’m guessing that’s what director Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow) had in mind from the start. Unfortunately, Paramount probably caught wind of Snow White and the Huntsman and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and decided that they needed to kick it up a notch. Big mistake.
The movie stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the classic fairy tale protagonists who survive being eaten by a witch and grow up to become bounty hunters. It’s yet another potential franchise in the making for Jeremy Renner, although based on this trailer I don’t see it being anything more than a one-off. I do like the idea of seeing twisted children’s stories brought to life in a darker way (ie. Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale), but this looks like another genre mash-up trying too hard to be something it’s not. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters hits theatres on January 11th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
