Rumours began to swirl last week that Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt might not be returning for the sequel after all. He had supposedly threatened to walk away from the project because he did not think they had enough time to meet the May 2014 release date. Now this week it’s looking like he has indeed stepped down, because Fox is already on the hunt for a replacement. While they’ve got a handful of interesting names in mind, the current frontrunner is said to be Cloverfield / Let Me In director Matt Reeves, who just recently passed on directing The Twilight Zone. Hit the jump to check out the rest of the directors under consideration.

According to Deadline, Fox is also looking at the following directors to take over Dawn of the Planet of the Apes:

  • Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth)
  • J Blakeson (The Disappearance Of Alice Creed)
  • Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later)
  • Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter)
  • Juan Antonio Bayona (The Impossible, The Orphanage)
  • Rian Johnson (Looper)

Guillermo del Toro seems like a long shot because let’s face it, the guy’s too busy with Pacific Rim right now. Although Rian Johnson is definitely poised for a shot at a big budget studio film, his representatives have already denied any involvement. As for the rest, it’s anyone’s guess.

Bayona seems like he might have the right amount of special effects experience and genre sensibility to pull it off, but Reeves really does look like the safest choice here. It seems a little too coincidental that he dropped out of The Twilight Zone this week and also just signed a deal with 20th Century Fox TV. We can probably expect an announcement to come shortly since they clearly don’t have any time to lose. Who would you most like to see direct Dawn of the Planet of the Apes?
